"Inauguration Means Business for Local Company"

While much of America watched as President-elect Barack Obama and Joseph Biden Jr. made their way to the White House on the historic Whistle Stop Train Tour Saturday, one Burlington man sat with his crew in their hotel rooms waiting for it all to be over.

Edwin Scott and four others from Tables, Chairs & Staging of 3158 Lear Drive, worked two long days in freezing temperatures to assemble the main stage, risers for the press and much more for the Wilmington, Del., leg of the famous trip.

"It was a major job... believe me," Scott said. "We loaded up two tractor-trailers full of supplies."

Scott and his crew were subcontracted by Garth Saunders from the Atlas Production Group in Raleigh, which won the bid for the job Monday afternoon.

"We were contacted on Friday about the job, submitted a bid on Monday at noon, we were awarded the project at 3 p.m. and I was up there by 6 a.m. Tuesday," Saunders said. "The election cycle is a lot like that... you never get more than three to four days out. You've got to be good at putting stuff together pretty quick. You've got to be pretty agile."

Event planners described what they wanted and then it was up to him to implement their vision, including hiring subcontractors like Tables, Chairs and Staging in Burlington.

Scott's crew worked with the local labor union to help get the work done in the short time frame and then it was just a waiting game for the event to be over and their deconstruction to begin.

"We could have met Biden if we wanted to... (the inauguration team) asked if we wanted passes," Scott said. "We would have been less than 40 feet away, but we were cold and we didn't want to deal with the crowds and the security was so tight so we just sat in the hotel."

The crew broke down the stages Saturday night and was back in Burlington by Sunday afternoon.

"It's an interesting job," he said. "We build these stages, but it's not as simple as it sounds. We have to meet a lot of requirements so it is interesting learning how to do stuff and keep everyone happy."

Scott's staff has a lot of experience balancing the needs of planners with the needs of secret security as they did many of the events in North Carolina before the election.

"We did the G8 Summit in Georgia a few years ago and one of our guys had a parking ticket so he couldn't get in," he recalled. "(The Secret Service) are sharp people ... they are a pleasure to work with, but they are definitely professionals."

Saunders said he and his staff have all gone through extensive background checks.

"They give us pins to designate where we can and cannot be," he said. "It makes no difference though... everyone gets searched."

Saunders said he was thankful for Scott's staff and was pleased with the event.

"The Presidential Inauguration Committee 2009 was tickled. They said this was one of the best events they've done," he said. "The Secret Service was delighted and said we were one of the best vendors they've worked with."

The President expresses himself
It's an amazing thing the way momentum can be transferred from one unstoppable phenomenon to another, but that's what has happened to Stewart Sound in North Carolina since they first became involved with a certain Mr Barack Obama.

"It all started with a call from Atlas Production Group in Raleigh NC" said Stewart Sound's founder Chad Stewart. "Atlas is an event specialist and we've done several things with them since that first call. They needed a PA system for a Democrat Presidential campaign event in Greensboro; boy! seems a long time ago now, yet it was only last September. Obama was on the election trail at the time, and this was a public event for about fifteen thousand people. We put in a PA composed entirely of d&b audiotechnik Q-Series Q1 loudspeakers. After the event Atlas came to us and said it was the first time on one of these events when they hadn't heard a single complaint; not one heckler in the audience said they couldn't hear what was being said."

Atlas knew a good thing when they heard it; they had placed an order for their own Q system by year's end, and since that fateful day in Greensboro Stewart Sound has provided d&b sound systems for a further six such events in the Carolinas. Then for the icing on the cake, they were contracted to provide a PA in Wilmington for an expected crowd of seventy five thousand people when, now President Elect Barack Obama, journeyed to Washington by train. "I don't have to tell you, this was a real honor for us," said an understandably excited Stewart, "the Obama Biden Whistle Stop Tour visiting Wilmington. But this was not as straightforward as you might imagine. There were unusual requirements, uppermost they didn't want loudspeakers getting in the way of the press or TV camera shots of the President as he spoke to the crowds. But of course they wanted everyone to hear."

The venue was the Tubman Garrett Riverfront Park, which directly overlooks the Wilmington Amtrak marshalling yard where the train stopped. On the day of the visit the weather was bright and clear, air temperature just five degrees, bone dry. "I designed a distributed system using six twenty five foot tall lifts holding some fifty Q1s between them. The lifts kept the sightlines as clear as possible; that's one of the great advantages of the d&b Q-Series: I don't believe there is another loudspeaker in existence that is so light, so fast to rig, and sounds so good. It is as powerful as something three times the size and to me it's about the best sounding box I've ever heard." Yet again there were no unhappy spectators unable to hear the President's speech. Maybe Stewart has a momentum all his own?
